How to Choose the Right Replacement Forklift Battery
A practical guide to matching a replacement forklift battery to your truck: voltage, amp-hour capacity, compartment dimensions, minimum weight, and connector type. With a worked example and common mistakes to avoid.

The five specs that matter
A replacement forklift battery must match the truck on five specs: voltage, amp-hour capacity, compartment dimensions (length × width × height), minimum tray weight, and connector type. Get any one of these wrong and the battery either physically does not fit, does not deliver enough current, or compromises the forklift's safety rating.
Forklifts rely on battery weight as counterweight. Installing a battery lighter than the OEM minimum reduces the truck's rated lifting capacity — a risk both to the operator and to whoever is walking underneath the load. OSHA treats this as a modified truck, which voids the data-plate rating until it's re-inspected.
Step 1 — Find the data plate
The forklift's data plate is a small metal or plastic nameplate, usually riveted to the dashboard, the mast base, or the frame near the operator's foot well. It lists the manufacturer, model, serial number, battery voltage, battery weight range, and compartment dimensions. Some trucks have a separate plate just for the battery compartment.

Step 2 — Match the voltage
Voltage is non-negotiable. A 48V truck cannot run a 36V battery (low voltage triggers protection and stalls the motor) and cannot run a 72V battery (over-voltage will damage the controller instantly). The four voltages we stock — 24V, 36V, 48V, 80V — cover the overwhelming majority of US fleets, from walkie pallet jacks up through heavy-duty and container-handling equipment.

Step 3 — Match (or exceed) the amp-hour rating
Amp-hours (Ah) determines how long the battery runs between charges. A higher Ah rating means longer runtime. You can always go higher than OEM spec if the compartment allows it; you should not go lower, or you'll cut shift capacity and accelerate battery wear (because the same work is done at a higher depth-of-discharge).
Typical ranges: 24V walkie pallet jacks run 300–750 Ah. 36V reach trucks run 600–1,200 Ah. 48V counterbalance trucks run 800–1,400 Ah. 80V heavy-duty and container-handling trucks run 600–1,300 Ah.
Step 4 — Fit the compartment
Compartment dimensions (length × width × height) must accommodate the new battery. Slop of more than 1/2 inch on any side needs steel spacers — a shifting battery breaks interconnect cables and wears on the compartment walls.
Measure the interior of the compartment, not the outside of the old battery, because batteries sometimes include insulation sleeves or spacer kits that make them appear larger than the compartment they fit.
Step 5 — Confirm weight
The data plate lists a minimum and maximum battery weight for the compartment. Stay within that range. Lead-acid batteries in the same case size generally fall in a predictable weight range by amp-hour, but the extremes of the Ah spectrum can push outside the OEM window — always double-check before ordering.
Step 6 — Pick the connector
Connectors are color-keyed by voltage (gray = 36V, blue = 48V, red = 24V, yellow = 12V, black = 80V) and sized by current draw (SB175 class for normal trucks, SB350 class for high-current specialty applications). The storefront filters automatically based on the battery you chose — you won't see a 350A connector offered on a 510 Ah 24V battery, for example.
If you're replacing a battery that already has a working connector on the truck, match the housing color and series. If you're switching connector types (common when standardizing a mixed fleet), the new connector also needs to be installed on the truck side.
Common mistakes
Installing a battery lighter than OEM minimum weight — this reduces rated capacity and is an OSHA violation.
Assuming any SB175-class connector works — the color matters. A blue 48V connector will not mate with a red 24V receptacle.
Using a flooded lead-acid charger on a lithium-ion replacement battery — this destroys lithium packs in the first cycle. Lithium retrofits require a matching charger.
Skipping compartment measurement and relying on the old battery size — sleeves, foam, or spacer kits can make the old battery look larger than the compartment.
