Forklift Battery Voltage Guide — 24V vs. 36V vs. 48V vs. 80V

What voltage does your forklift need? A plain-English guide to 24V, 36V, 48V, and 80V industrial batteries, which trucks run at each voltage, and why voltage is the one spec you cannot fudge.

Why voltage is the one spec you cannot fudge

Of the five specs that matter for a forklift battery, voltage is the most consequential. A truck's entire electrical system is designed around a specific voltage — the motor, the controller, the BDI, the charger. Mismatch the voltage and the truck either stalls (too low) or fries its controller (too high).

Color-keyed connectors exist specifically to prevent this: a blue 48V connector will not mate with a red 24V receptacle even if someone tries. That's the last line of defense; the specification work happens first.

24V — walkie pallet jacks and small rider trucks

24V batteries power the lightest class of electric material handling: walkie pallet jacks (Crown WP, Raymond 102/112/240), rider pallet trucks (Yale MP, Toyota 7BRU), single-stage stackers, low-level order pickers, and compact 3-wheel electric counterbalance trucks.

Typical capacity: 300–750 Ah. Typical runtime: 4–6 hours on a full charge.

Common connector: red SB175-class. Never SB350-class — that housing is reserved for heavy-duty 36V+ applications.

36V — reach trucks and mid-range counterbalance

36V is the warehouse workhorse. It powers Raymond 4000/7000 reach trucks, Crown RR narrow-aisle trucks, Crown SC/RC stand-up counterbalance, and mid-range Toyota and Yale electric counterbalance forklifts in the 3,000–4,000 lb capacity class.

Typical capacity: 600–1,200 Ah. Typical runtime: 6–8 hours.

Common connectors: gray SB175-class for standard applications, gray SB350-class for higher-capacity or heavy-duty variants.

48V — heavy-duty counterbalance

48V powers the heavy-duty electric counterbalance class: Toyota 8FBE/7FBE, Hyster E-series, Yale ERP, CAT/Mitsubishi EP-series, and Komatsu FB-series trucks in the 3,000–8,000 lb capacity range. Cold-storage and pneumatic-tire electric trucks also tend to be 48V because of the higher sustained current draw.

Typical capacity: 800–1,400 Ah. Typical runtime: 8+ hours in single-shift operations.

Common connectors: blue SB175-class for standard applications, blue SB350-class for large-capacity batteries.

Voltage creep: newer (post-2018) OEMs have moved toward 48V for trucks that would have been 36V a decade ago, because 48V is more efficient at higher currents. If you're replacing a battery in an older truck and the data plate reads 36V, buy 36V — don't "upgrade" to 48V without replacing the drivetrain.

80V — heavy-duty counterbalance, VNA & container handling

80V powers the heaviest equipment we stock: large-capacity counterbalance forklifts (8,000+ lb capacity) from Jungheinrich, Linde, Hyster, Toyota, Yale, and Caterpillar, plus very narrow aisle (VNA) turret trucks and Kalmar container/cargo handlers.

Typical capacity: 600–1,300 Ah. Connector families vary more at this voltage than lower classes — common options include black SBE320-class, Schaltbau 320, and Anderson Euro 320. Always confirm the connector type and color from the data plate before ordering.
