Forklift Battery Connector Types — Color Codes and Amp Ratings Explained
Anderson SB, SBX, SBE, and Euro-series forklift battery connectors decoded: color-to-voltage mapping, current ratings (50A / 175A / 350A), and which connector fits which battery. Avoid the common mistake of buying the wrong housing.

Two variables: color and amp rating
Every forklift battery connector is specified on two axes: the color of the plastic housing (which keys the connector to a specific voltage) and the current rating of the contacts (which keys it to the battery's capacity).
Get the color wrong and the connector won't mate physically — the polarization cams in the housing are color-specific. Get the amp rating wrong and either the contacts burn under load (under-rated) or you waste money on oversized housings the battery never uses (over-rated).
Color-to-voltage mapping
The forklift industry standard color code (used by Anderson Power Products SB, SBX, and SBE series):
• Yellow — 12V.
• Red — 24V.
• Gray — 36V.
• Blue — 48V.
• Green — 72V.
• Black — 80V.
The Anderson Euro (REMA DIN 43589) connector is voltage-agnostic — it uses housing size and pin count as the key rather than color, and is more common in European equipment than US forklifts.
Current rating tiers
SB50 (50A rating) — for the smallest batteries, typically under 150 Ah. Most common in walkie pallet jacks and AGVs.
SB120 (120A) — light-duty, seldom seen on production forklifts.
SB175 / SBE160 / SBX175 (160–175A) — the industry workhorse. Fits 24V, 36V, and 48V batteries from ~300 Ah up to ~850 Ah. This is the right choice for the vast majority of replacements.
SB350 / SBX350 / SBE320 (320–350A) — specialty high-current connector for batteries 700 Ah and above on 36V or 48V systems. Also appears on 80V heavy-equipment.
Why a 24V battery never takes an SB350
A common question: "can I use a red SB350 on a 24V battery?" The answer is no, for two reasons.
First, a 24V forklift never draws enough continuous current to warrant a 350A-class connector — even the largest 24V batteries we stock are under 750 Ah. Second, OEM trays for 24V batteries ship with SB175-class housings by default; you'd be retrofitting a truck connector that already works fine.
Our storefront enforces this rule: a 24V battery in the cart will never display an SB350-family connector as an option. The filter is at /api/connectors?voltage=24&Hours=510 and applies an amp-floor (no 350-class under 700 Ah) and a voltage-floor (no 350-class under 36V).
SB vs. SBX vs. SBE
SB (standard) is the original Anderson Power Products housing. Reliable, inexpensive, ubiquitous.
SBX (heavy-duty) shares the SB's pin footprint but has a reinforced housing rated for more insertion cycles. Common OEM spec on newer trucks.
SBE (European) is a lighter variant common in European equipment. SBE160 and SBE320 are voltage-keyed like SB but with a different polarization geometry — they do not mate with SB housings.
Within the same current tier (e.g. SB175 / SBE160 / SBX175), all three housings are functionally compatible replacements, but you must match the connector on the truck side. If the truck has an SB175 receptacle, the battery needs an SB175 plug — an SBE160 plug will not fit.
